A Place Where Art Education is Discussed and Explored!

About SBMA Education Department

The Education Department at the South Bend Museum of Art develops programs to serve the interests and needs of anyone who wants to learn or teach art.   Every week, teachers, parents and students of all ages come to our galleries and studio classes to be inspired and enriched through art experiences.  Whether your goal is to meet curricular standards or your own inner artist – or  both! – we have programs and classes you won’t want to miss.

Did you know?

~Each semester we host a Teacher Night, offering ideas and resources for integrating art in the classroom, along with gallery tours, refreshments and “give aways”

~We welcome school groups to visit and tour the Museum at any time – call or email to arrange your field trip.   We can even work with teachers to design a hands-on studio experience as part of your visit

~ There are six Museum Family Days every year at SBMA, each one designed to give children and parents a unique and fun opportunity to make art

~Nearly 1000 families participate in SBMA Outreach programs, like Art Beat, Festival of Banners and “A Book and a Blanket”

~SBMA has a full set of state of the art studios – from ceramics to jewelry to weaving and photography – available to use during school visits.  Just let us know which studio you would like to rent when you call to schedule your visit.

~ We offer teacher scholarships for our studio art classes

~ An education blog is coming to the SBMA website in 2011!  This online forum for sharing news and stories about our programs, local artists, and art education will also allow teachers to communicate with one another about their classroom needs and experiences in teaching art.
